Tax is calculated on the price after the discount. Amounts are currency-neutral.
How it works
How to use
Enter the original price and discount rate, add a tax rate if needed, then calculate.
Method
Final = price × (1 − discount/100) × (1 + tax/100).
Example
20% off 100 leaves 80; 10% tax then makes the final price 88.
Read the result like a checkout receipt
Start with the sticker price and the percentage off. SnakTool separates the result into four numbers instead of hiding everything behind one final total: how much the discount saves, the reduced price before tax, the tax added to that reduced price, and the final amount after tax.
That separation is useful when a sale sign and a checkout total seem to tell different stories. The savings belong to the discount itself; optional tax is added afterward and does not erase or increase the amount the discount removed.
From 25% off to the price you actually keep
A percentage discount answers two complementary questions. The amount saved is original price × discount rate / 100. The amount left to pay before tax is original price × (1 − discount rate / 100).
On an 80 item at 25% off, the discount removes 20 and leaves 60. Thinking in terms of the percentage left can make mental checks quicker: 25% off means 75% of the original price remains.
- Input
- Original price 80 · 25% off
- Method
- 80 × 25% = 20 saved · 80 × 75% = 60 left
- Result
- Savings 20 · Discounted price 60
A quick sale-price check on a 100 price
When the original price is 100, the percentage and money saved have the same numeric value, which makes it a convenient reference for checking common sale signs. The table below is a reference only; the calculator works with any non-negative original price.
| Discount | You save | Price before tax |
|---|---|---|
| 10% | 10 | 90 |
| 20% | 20 | 80 |
| 25% | 25 | 75 |
| 30% | 30 | 70 |
| 50% | 50 | 50 |
| 75% | 75 | 25 |
Tax enters after the sale price in this calculator
If you provide a tax rate, SnakTool applies it to the discounted price rather than the original sticker price. For a 100 item with 20% off, the reduced price is 80. At an entered tax rate of 8%, tax is 6.40 and the final price becomes 86.40.
Leaving tax at 0% makes the discounted price and final price identical. The tool does not look up a tax jurisdiction or decide whether an item is taxable; it simply applies the non-negative rate you enter to the post-discount amount.
- Input
- 100 original · 20% off · 8% tax
- Method
- 100 → 80 after discount → 6.40 tax
- Result
- 20 saved · 86.40 final price
“20% off, then another 10%” is a different deal
Successive percentage discounts should not normally be added together. Starting from 100, taking 20% off leaves 80; taking another 10% from that reduced price removes 8 more and leaves 72. The combined reduction is therefore 28%, not 30%.
The current SnakTool Discount Calculator has one discount field, so it does not stack several offers in one calculation. If you need to inspect a sequential offer, calculate the first reduction and use its discounted price as the original price for the next calculation.
Know which discount question this tool answers
This is a forward percent-off calculator: you know the original price and discount rate, and you want the savings and resulting price. It does not work backward from an original and sale price to discover an unknown percentage, and it does not reconstruct an original price from a discounted price.
It also does not apply fixed-value coupons, shipping charges, store-specific promotion rules, or currency conversion. Those operations change the pricing question rather than the arithmetic performed by this tool.
The endpoints are meaningful: 0% and 100%
A 0% discount removes nothing, so the pre-tax price stays equal to the original price. A 100% discount removes the full original amount, leaving a discounted price of zero; because this calculator applies tax to that zero discounted amount, its calculated tax and final price are also zero.
The original price, discount rate, and tax rate cannot be negative, and a discount above 100% is rejected. The tax rate is not capped by the calculation engine, so the numeric rate entered is used as provided.
Frequently asked questions about Discount Calculator
What is the fastest way to check a percent-off price?
Multiply the original price by the percentage that remains. For example, 30% off means 70% remains, so an 80 price becomes 80 × 0.70 = 56 before tax.
Why can the checkout total be higher than the discounted price?
When a tax rate is entered, SnakTool adds tax after calculating the reduced price. The discounted price is therefore the pre-tax sale amount, while final price includes the calculated tax.
How do I calculate a percentage discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage divided by 100. That gives the amount saved.
How do I calculate the price after a discount?
Subtract the savings from the original price, or multiply the original price by 1 minus the discount percentage divided by 100.
What is the difference between discounted price and final price?
Discounted price is the amount after the discount but before optional tax. Final price is the discounted price plus the tax calculated by SnakTool.
Does SnakTool apply tax before or after the discount?
After. The discount is calculated first, then the entered tax rate is applied to the discounted price.
What happens if I leave tax at 0%?
The tax amount is zero and the final price equals the discounted price.
What happens with a 100% discount?
The entire original price is saved and the discounted price becomes zero. Under this calculator's tax-after-discount model, tax and final price are also zero.
Can I enter a negative price, discount, or tax rate?
No. Original price, discount percentage, and tax rate must all be non-negative.
Is 20% off followed by another 10% off the same as 30% off?
No. Sequential discounts apply to different price bases. Starting from 100, 20% off leaves 80 and another 10% off leaves 72, which is a 28% total reduction.
Can SnakTool calculate two stacked discounts at once?
No. The current calculator accepts one discount percentage. You can calculate the first discounted price and use that result as the starting price for a second calculation.
Can the calculator find the discount percentage from an original and sale price?
No. The current tool performs the forward calculation from an original price and a known discount percentage.
Can it find the original price from a discounted price?
No. Reverse discount calculation is not a current input mode.
Does the calculator know which tax rate applies to my purchase?
No. You provide the numeric tax rate. Taxability and the legally applicable rate depend on the product and jurisdiction.
Does the calculator include shipping, fees, or store-specific coupons?
No. It calculates from the original price, one discount percentage, and the optional tax rate only.
