Area is length squared
A linear conversion factor has to act in two dimensions. Since 1 m = 100 cm, a square meter is 100 cm × 100 cm = 10,000 cm², not 100 cm². Likewise, 1 ft = 0.3048 m gives 1 ft² = 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m².
That squared relationship is why area conversions can look much larger than the matching length conversion.
Floor area: square metres and square feet
For homes, offices, rooms, and floor plans, m² ↔ ft² is the most practical cross-system pair. Multiply square metres by about 10.7639 to estimate square feet; multiply square feet by exactly 0.09290304 to return to square metres.
The converter needs the area itself. If a room is 3 m by 4 m, calculate 12 m² first and then convert that 12 m². It does not accept length and width as separate dimensions.

Land area: hectares, acres, square kilometres, and square miles
A hectare is exactly 10,000 m². An acre is 4,046.8564224 m², so one hectare is about 2.47105 acres and one acre is about 0.404686 hectare. At larger scales, 1 km² equals 100 hectares, while 1 mi² equals exactly 640 acres.
