How it works
How to use
Enter a volume and choose a metric or explicitly labelled US customary unit.
Method
Values are converted through liters. Imperial UK units are not mixed with US liquid units.
Example
1 US gallon equals exactly 3.785411784 liters.
The US liquid chain
The US customary units in SnakTool fit into one exact chain: 1 gallon = 4 quarts = 8 pints = 16 cups = 128 fluid ounces = 256 tablespoons = 768 teaspoons. Moving within that chain is a matter of following those fixed subdivisions.
| 1 US unit | Equals |
|---|---|
| Gallon | 4 qt = 8 pt = 16 cups = 128 fl oz |
| Quart | 2 pt = 4 cups = 32 fl oz |
| Pint | 2 cups = 16 fl oz |
| Cup | 8 fl oz = 16 tbsp = 48 tsp |
| Fluid ounce | 2 tbsp = 6 tsp |
| Tablespoon | 3 tsp |
The bridge to liters is 3.785411784
One US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters. That single bridge connects the customary chain to the metric units in the converter: a quart is 0.946352946 L, a pint 0.473176473 L, a cup 0.2365882365 L, a fluid ounce 0.0295735295625 L, a tablespoon 0.01478676478125 L, and a teaspoon 0.00492892159375 L.
Liters, milliliters, cubic centimeters, and cubic meters
On the metric side, 1 L = 1,000 mL, and 1 mL = 1 cm³. A cubic meter is much larger: 1 m³ = 1,000 L = 1,000,000 cm³. The equality between milliliters and cubic centimeters is especially useful when a capacity is written in one notation and a technical measurement in the other.
US gallon does not mean Imperial gallon
Gallon, quart, pint, fluid ounce, and other familiar names do not have one universal size. SnakTool's listed customary units are US liquid measures. An Imperial gallon is about 4.546 liters rather than 3.785411784 liters, so selecting US gallon for a UK Imperial value produces the wrong conversion.
The same caution applies to recipes: the cup, tablespoon, and teaspoon on this page are the US values implemented by the converter. A recipe using another national measuring convention needs that convention's factors instead.
Volume is not weight
Liters, cups, and gallons tell you how much space something occupies; grams and kilograms tell you mass. There is no universal liters-to-kilograms conversion. Connecting the two requires the material's density, so equal volumes of water, oil, flour, or another substance need not have equal masses.
Frequently asked questions about Volume Converter
Why are US and Imperial gallons different?
They belong to different measurement systems and have different defined volumes. SnakTool uses the US liquid gallon, exactly 3.785411784 liters.
Is one milliliter the same volume as one cubic centimeter?
Yes. 1 mL equals exactly 1 cm³.
How many liters are in a US gallon?
One US liquid gallon is exactly 3.785411784 liters.
How many milliliters are in a US cup?
One US cup is exactly 236.5882365 milliliters.
How many cups are in a US gallon?
There are exactly 16 US cups in one US liquid gallon.
How many fluid ounces are in a US cup?
There are exactly 8 US fluid ounces in one US cup.
How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon?
There are exactly 3 US teaspoons in one US tablespoon.
How many tablespoons are in a US cup?
There are exactly 16 US tablespoons in one US cup.
How many liters are in a cubic meter?
One cubic meter is exactly 1,000 liters.
How many cubic centimeters are in a milliliter?
One milliliter is exactly one cubic centimeter.
Can I use these values for a UK Imperial gallon?
No. The gallon supported here is the US liquid gallon. An Imperial gallon uses a different volume.
Can volume be converted directly to kilograms or grams?
Not without density. Volume and mass are different quantities, so the material being measured matters.
